THE ORIGIN OF IRISH DANCE

The origins of Irish dance are uncertain, we should look for them in the invasions and migrations of the country. Each culture contributed its musical preferences and its dances, it cannot be said with certainty that the Celts were the first to practice them, but nevertheless their circular dances they have come down to today, and these arrived in Ireland more than 2,000 years ago.

There are no written testimonies about its Celtic origin, but perhaps it has its roots in the rituals of the Celtic civilization. They danced in honor of the oak and the sun.

Later in the twelfth century the Normans also contributed their dances and customs and in the sixteenth century there is already talk of 3 Irish dances: Hey, Rinnce Fada and Trenchmore that were practiced in the halls of the castles accompanied by bagpipes and harps.

But it was later that Irish dance began to take the form that we know today. In the eighteenth century the first official dance teachers appeared who went from town to town and were called "Dance Masters”. Previously, Irish dance was more improvised, the steps were acquired by watching other families or friends who danced informally at parties or gatherings where traditional music was playing. Dance Teachers introduced structure, discipline and choreography and were the creators of the first "dynasties” of Dance Schools.

They are used there are two types of shoes: ghillies and hardshoes. The former are used to practice choreographies that require alignment, height and fast turns, and the latter are heavy shoes that allow you to quickly shoe.

The technique for dancing the two types of choreographies are the same, that's why we call this genre "Irish dancing".

Soft shoe: the "ghillies" they have internal pads and long laces that tie on the foot and calf.

Hard shoe: the hardshoes, are the unisex shoes that are used to generate sound. They are not like tap shoes, because they have a high heel and the half-toe is made of fiberglass.

This silver pendant reflects the most authentic tradition of Ireland: its dance, the Irish dance.
