CELTIC TREE OF LIFE AS A SYMBOL
Meaning and origin of the Celtic Tree of Life.
The Celtic Tree of Celtic Life, or Crann Bethadh in Gaelic, is much more than a trunk born from roots under the earth and extending its branches upwards towards the sky.
The religion of Celtic people it was polytheistic, that is, they worshipped various divinities, but above all they worshipped Nature. They were very close to her and that's why their symbols revolve around her. Many of his symbols were attached to the trees: the oak it represented strength, stability that's why they believed to heal themselves by taking shelter under its branches, the hazel protected from negative energies, the ash tree it represented the wisdom, the birch it was youth and renewal, the alder it connected with the afterlife that's why they used it to make musical instruments whose music attracted spirits, and even the apple tree she had the gift of femininity and the holly the one about masculinity.
The tree was for the Celts a source of life from the material point of view because it gave them firewood, shade, fruits and gave shelter to the birds that they used as food. But also from the spiritual point of view, because there was nothing that possessed the 4 elements of life: water made sap, the earth on the roots, the air that gave food to its leaves and the fire that is born from rubbing two branches. This is where the expression "tree of life" comes from.
The Tree of Life was for the Celtic people the axis of their lives, it represented the path to be followed by men. They compared birth with the roots, and death with the cup when rising to heaven, representing in this way the link between heaven and earth, between life and death.
